Our house was built around the turn of the century by the nearby (and now closed) Burlington Mill. The neighborhood is referred to as the 'Mill Hill' area of Mooresville. Around 1915 or so, the mill, who had initially retained ownership of the houses and leased them to their employees, began selling the homes to employees. Over the years, most of the houses have had some sort of renovation and expansion. Ours was probably either originally all one room, or two large rooms (the current master bedroom and family room). The nursery was probably once a porch. The kitchen and bathroom were also add-ons.
Nov 01
- The living room floor is finished, as are the cabinet doors. The floor was finished just in time for the new furniture we had ordered two weeks previous. There's been a drastic change to the ordering of the remaining stages of construction, as well as the access to the upstairs areas. The main access will be through a loft-style opening in the living room ceiling, and a large window in the guest room will allow for moving furniture in and out. The guest room will be started first, with a pause in progress after the window is in and the floor is down to pull down the hobby room walls to make the dining area in the kitchen. Finishing up the guest room will then allow us to turn our attention to the nursery.
Dec 01
- Jumped ahead a bit in schedule and took down the walls to expand the kitchen. See below for reasoning!
March 02
- Talk about a drastic change in construction order--there's a baby coming. All resources are were directed to the nursery, and pictures are available on Tucker's site.
February 03
- The BIG renovation has begun--the two bedroom, one bathroom, one den 900 square foot addition. It rates its own page, as the 'restoration' attitude we've taken so far doesn't really apply. We're still going to match it to the character of the house, but starting fresh is much different from fixing what you have.
